Master text styles

PowerPoint text styles are defined within a multi-level list on a Master Layout Slide. Each level of this list can be formatted for a specific purpose.

The first (or top) level may be formatted as a sub-heading. Subsequent levels generally have plainer formatting for body text or lists. Indents allow room for bullets or numbers, which may be styled separately. PowerPoint goes to five levels by default.

Increase or decrease list levels

The way you apply a style to a line of text is to raise or lower its level within the list.

Click anywhere within a line of text. In the Home tab, Paragraph group, click the Decrease List Level button to move the text up a level.

Alternatively, select the whole line of text and press the Tab key. Clicking the Increase List Level button (or Shift + Tab keys) moves it back down.

You can apply the levels to several lines of text at once.

Add, remove or replace bullets

To remove or replace the bullet from a line of text, select the text and click the Bullets button. This is how you make the text appear as paragraphs rather than items in a list.
