How to save a document as a template in Word

If you've created a great Word document, you can save it as a Word template in four easy steps.

When you open a Word template, it creates a new file titled Document1 – Word. If you modify this document and want to use it as a template for new docs, you need save it as a template. Here’s how to do it:

  • Click on the File tab, then select Save As.

  • Click the Browse button.

  • At File name, rename your template then …

  • … under Save as type, select Word Template (*.dotx) and click the Save button.

Word will save the template to the Custom Office Templates folder.

You can access your new template via File tab then New (or Ctrl + N). It will appear under the Personal tab.
